BACKGROUND:

The branch works on Neisseria meningitidis, Bordetella spp., Haemophilus influenzae, tetanus and diphtheria. Epidemiologic and laboratory activities encompass characterization of risk factors for disease, outbreak investigations, surveillance, method and tool development, pathogen detection and characterization to monitor anti-microbial resistance (AMR) trends and strain genomics, vaccine evaluations, implementation and evaluation of prevention strategies, and vaccine policy development and assessment, both domestically and globally. Cross-cutting activities on vaccines include developing, implementing and evaluating guidelines for use of vaccines, standardization and quality assurance activities, and characterization of potential vaccine antigens. Staff engages in collaborations with numerous CDC programs, other federal agencies, state health departments and external partners to carry out these activities.
