Name: Aurora Public Art Mural: Aurora’s Musical History
Proposed Services: The City of Aurora will be commissioning a Public Art Mural along the south side of Mundy Park, at 31 S. Broadway Ave. Mundy Park is a public space in Downtown Aurora, connecting Broadway Ave. to the Water Street Pedestrian Mall, and serving as an outdoor concert space for The Venue, a non-profit live music venue. The mural design chosen for this project will express the diverse musical history of Aurora, inclusive of but not limited to the 1930s Leland Bluebird Sessions. The mural will be painted on multiple aluminum panels, provided by the City, to be installed on the brick, north-facing façade of 31 S. Broadway, by the City. The space available for this project is 12’ high by 60’ wide. Pending the nature of submissions and total cost of bids, the mural design may or may not extend to the visible, exterior second story of 33 S. Broadway. As the north façade of 33 S. Broadway is poured concrete in good condition, a potential, second-story extension of the design onto this wall would be painted directly onto the concrete surface.
This application process is a request for qualifications based on previous work of a similar scale; this is not a request for a design. Submitting Artists may include an optional, rough concept for the project with their application if they wish; all intellectual property belongs to the Artist. Up to three Submitting Artists may be selected for a paid design contract to create a final design, based on their own research of Aurora’s musical history and in their own established style. The completed design(s) will to be considered for City’s mural design approval process prior to the potential offer of a project contract for installation.
